About Dr. CheungDr. Cheung began her studies as an undergraduate at the University of California, Los Angeles. During her four years at UCLA, she volunteered at various hospitals and doctors’ offices. Her decision to enter the field of podiatry stemmed from her own foot problems which began to bother her at an early age. Foot problems afflicted several generations of her family and she had seen several doctors by the time she finished college. After receiving her degree in biology, she attended the California College of Podiatric Medicine (now the California School of Podiatric Medicine at Samuel Merritt College), where she was a recipient of the Alumni Association’s scholarship and started a local chapter of after-school tutoring and mentorship for inner city youth. Podiatric medical school is a four-year program, with the last year based completely in a clinical setting. While the older generation of podiatrists did not undergo any residency, more recent graduates typically perform one to two years of residency. Dr. Cheung was accepted to one of the most competitive three-year surgical residencies in Southern California. Based out of both private practice and the Kaiser system, the residency stressed orthopedic as well as podiatric training. After becoming the first female resident to complete the program, Dr. Cheung had an opportunity to undertake another year of training with some of the country’s most prestigious doctors and surgeons. She was accepted, and underwent a rigorous year of training with orthopedic and emergency room call, refining surgical skills and enhancing medical knowledge. Dr. Cheung is among a handful of podiatrists in the country that has completed four years of post medical school residency. Before entering private practice in San Francisco, Dr. Cheung underwent major reconstructive foot surgery to alleviate the symptoms that had been plaguing her for years. Being on the other end of surgery has given Dr. Cheung great perspective and empathy for her patients, and she strives to be a better doctor by being a patient first.
